Saughall opened their 2017 league campaign and life in the Cheshire Cricket League, with a crunching 122 run victory at Mellor. On a sun-bathed Saturday, the visitors were inserted to bat first on a slow pitch and got off to a solid start thanks to Ben Salisbury (20) and the inventive James Huxley (33).

Adam Griffiths was the star of the show though, scoring a sublime 77. Tony Roberts (15) and Tate Beamont (5 not out) swung with gusto in the dying overs as Saughall reached 166 for 5, a competitive total on a testing pitch.

Saughall's new ball pair ripped through Mellor's top-order with canny left-armer Tony Roberts (4 for 14) the magician, Shaun Watts (2 for 16) his glamorous assistant. With the scoreboard reading 25 for 6, surely there would be no Mellor drama on opening day for Saughall? Skipper Alen Roberts shuffled his pack and it paid off with leg-spinner Adam Griffiths (3 for 4) following up his earlier runs with three wickets. Jon Sweeney, playing his first game for Saughall for over 20 years, grabbed the other wicket to fall as Mellor were dismissed for 44 in the 21st over. Chris McCartney took three sharp catches behind the stumps including a brilliant one-handed diving effort that typified the visitors efforts in the field.

Skipper Alen Roberts: "It was a good all-round team performance today. We batted sensibly, bowled the ball in the right areas and took every catch that came our way. I couldn't ask for more". Next week Saughall entertain Hartford.
